Are you getting in your own way? 5 Steps to awareness

In my work as a transformation coach for ambitious women I take my clients through a 5 step process call "Make It Happen 360". The "It" I am referring to is a happy balanced life. I know, through experience, it's absolutely possible to have a successful career and have a happy, healthy and fulfilling life.

The first step in the process is called "See It". There are 2 parts to this step, first you need to be clear on what you want, what a happy balanced life looks for you and what that would feel like if you had it. Because, as Dr Seuss says, "If you don't know where you're going any road can take you there."

How can you possibly create what you want if you don't know what that is.

When you become clear on what you want, in my experience, you'll very quickly identify several reasons why you can't make this happen. You might see other people as a problem, you might not believe you have the resources you need or maybe you don't believe you're worthy, that’s just to name a few common barriers. This is where "seeing it" becomes important, because even though these barriers are real to you they are not the true reason you're not yet living the life you want. They're symptoms of something much deeper.

You're life experiences and the lessons you've learned have created your view of the world and your circumstances. So what you really need to see is, your thoughts and beliefs about your current situation and why you think and believe what you do. We can all change how we look at our circumstances and create different feelings about what is and is'nt possible. When you do this new opportunities will become apparent to you.

Here's what to do;

  1. Write down the main reason why you you're not, this will be personal living the life you want. Maybe you're a single parent and you feel you have to be available to your kids to help them with their homework every day.

  2. Next write down why this is important to you. Maybe you believe that all good responsible parents help their kids with their homework.

  3. Now close your eyes and relax, ask yourself where did this belief come from? Why do you think this is true?

  4. What if this was not true, what if this is only true to you and there's another way to look at your situation? What is that other perspective?

  5. Now you have a choice, you can continue doing as you've always done or you can make a change based on your new awareness. What's important is to recognize is you do have a choice.

You can repeat this process as many times as you like, the purpose is to raise your awareness or see how your current view of the world is creating your current situation. My clients take, The Institute of Professional Excellence in Coaching Energy Leadership Index Assessment©, which shows them which of their thoughts are helping them and which ones are causing them stress. Having this awareness alone is an important step towards creating the life my clients want. Next month I will share the second step in my 5 step process, "Own It".
